Tests were recently conducted by an independent authority comparing the new Strainrite Joule Shield wooden Post Claw Insulator with those of another well known manufacturer. Results clearly proved that the Joule Shield insulator significantly out performed the existing product, withstanding 50% more voltage in a dry test and a staggering 100% more voltage in wet conditions (simulated rain.
Limitations have become apparent with current insulator designs as energiser technology has developed over the last 70 years. Modern energisers now have a far greater power output than the older generation models. Higher power is generally desirable from a farmeråÕs point of view, providing more effective stock control. With increased power output there is subsequently far greater requirements on insulators. Where the existing design insulators were effective with the older lower output energisers, they do not provide the same performance in withstanding the higher current output of the modern energiser, which results in power loss and of course affects the efficiency of the fence whilst costing more in power to run it.
The new patented, Joule Shield design addresses these issues and is uniquely different from other insulators already on the market. Generally all other insulators on the market are of similar design. The main difference with the new Joule shield insulators is that they have multiple shield plates. This significantly increases the surface area and increases the tracking distance, greatly reducing potential power leakage.
This is the first time this concept has been applied to electric fence insulators.The technology behind the multi-shield design is well proven; it can be seen with all insulators on high voltage power lines which all have multiple shield plates for the same reason.
Some manufactures have attempted to increase the tracking distance by simply spacing the insulators further off the post, however this tends to causes them to become more fragile and are more likely to be broken off. The new Joule Shield insulators are structurally designed with a low profile, and are manufactured from high quality, impact resistant, UV stabilised polymers, suitable for New ZealandåÕs harsh climate.
